I’ve come to realize that as a kama`aina company, Foodland truly cares about our community and the place we call home. In one of our meetings, someone reported that an average Hawaii family uses more than 700 plastic bags a year for grocery shopping. With more than 400,000 Hawaii households, that’s more than 280,000,000 plastic bags a year! We knew that we needed to work towards changing those statistics.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and all of us at Foodland want to take this opportunity to thank you for your business. As a local business -- and the only locally owned grocery chain with stores statewide -- we depend on your support and are very grateful to have you as a customer. I can’t tell you how excited I am about the new program we kicked off at Foodland earlier this week! Our Take the Bag Challenge invites customers to join us in committing to use only reusable bags when they shop over the next six weeks and our hope is that we can change habits, help protect Hawaii’s environment and reduce our plastic bag usage by 50%! It’s a big goal, but one we are confident we can achieve with your help!

Last week Foodland was honored to do the floral arrangements for a Tour de France inspired awards dinner. Sunflower centerpieces in mason jars with raffia bows created a French countryside feel. Fashioned after Tour de France podium bouquets, honorees of the evening were presented with yellow rose bouquets with a collar of explosion grass and ti leaf finish.
With the launch of our Certified Angus Beef Contest, I thought that it would be a great time to familiarize everyone with a few different cuts of steak. Hopefully, next time you’re at a steakhouse or checking out our meat department this will help you picking out a steak to your liking. Let me know if you’d like to know about any other cuts not mentioned here.
