Acai Bowl 101

One of my favorite afternoon snacks is an acai (ah-sah-EE) bowl…I’m eating one right now! For those of you who are well-acquainted with this purple berry from Brazil you know all about the high levels of anti-oxidants and the amazing energy they pack. I am not going to go into great detail about the omega this and the vitamin something that…all that you need to know at this point is that they are delicious and a great way to bring healthy habits to your snacking. If you have never had an acai bowl then stop what you are doing and go out and find your nearest neighborhood juice shop…step up to the counter and order a bowl and then come back here and I will help you make your own. Making one yourself costs less than half of what you will pay for one from a shop…they are easy and fun to make too!

Here’s your shopping list:

  1. Sambazon Acai Smoothie Packs…these are found in the frozen section and are a 4 pack of individual servings. Two of the individual serving packs = one good size bowl.
  2. Apple Bananas.
  3. Apple juice or soymilk. This is used to sweeten the acai fruit and thin it out a bit
  4. Granola. The Golden Temple Vanilla Almond is bar the most popular and complements the acai flavors very well

Here’s what you do:

  1. Add the two packets of acai, a splash of apple juice or soy milk and half an apple banana into a blender.
  2. Blend on high…you might need to add more apple juice or soy milk to get to the desired consistency. It should look like and feel like sorbet when done.
  3. Put it a bowl and garnish with the other half of the banana (sliced) and granola.

Have fun with it…many people with drizzle a little honey or agave nectar on top for added sweetness. It’s summertime and berries are in season…try extra blueberries or strawberries on top.

Healthy snacking and saving money…woo hoo! I told you they packed a lot of energy…

Katy's Kettle Corn Popchips!

Mmmm…popchips! You know I love them. What’s not to love? No artificial colors, flavors or anything really bad for you. Katy Perry apparently loves them too and recently partnered with popchips to create her own new flavor.

I usually don’t get crazy for Kettle Corn, as I like salty more than sweet, but let's just say, I tried Katy Perry's new Kettle Corn popchips, and I liked it!

They have the perfect blend of sweet and salty with all the popchips goodness. ... more »

The Greek Yogurt Phenomenon

Greek Yogurt has really taken off in the last few years and for good reason. It's natural, nutritious, full of protein and the taste is uniquely rich and creamy.

Silk® Fruit & Protein available now at Foodland!

I finally got to try the Silk® Fruit & Protein drinks! But let me tell you, it wasn’t easy….

When I originally got samples of the three flavors, I organized a tasting within our office for a few people to try. I ended up getting called into a meeting and when I came out, the containers were all empty and I had nothing but glowing reviews.

Then, I went and bought one at Foodland Beretania and my niece polished it off before I ever got a chance at it!

Cooking with Coconut Oil

Have you tried cooking with coconut oil yet?

It has become a staple in my house, but often when I tell people about this wonderful oil, I hear something to the effect of, “aren’t tropical oils bad for you?” I also heard a lot about coconut oil being high in saturated fat, which didn’t sound good either.

Earth Balance Coconut Peanut Butter Spread

Anybody remember that Reese’s Peanut butter commercial (I might be dating myself here) where the guys are walking around the corner…one is eating chocolate and the other is eating peanut butter. They bump into each other and create a truly wonderful flavor combination.
