Hawaii Grown Dragon Fruit

One of our favorite Hawaii Grown fruits is in season and on sale this week at your local Foodland and Sack N Save stores. Grown by the Kona Dragon Fruit Company on the Big Island, this beautiful Dragon Fruit comes in shades of green, red, purple, and pink. The flesh of the fruit inside can range from purple, pink, red and even white with tiny edible black seeds.

The sweet flavor and texture is similar to that of a kiwi mixed with a pear, but you really have to try it for yourself to understand how unique and delicious the flavor is.

Dragon Fruit is also low in calories and full of nutrients, including Vitamin C, phosphorus, calcium, fiber and antioxidants.

Recently we met with Susan and Terry Weaver of Kona Dragon Fruit Company and asked them for some tips on how to prepare and enjoy this exotic tropical fruit. Here are some of their delicious suggestions:

  • Top a cheese cake
  • Garnish a haupia pudding
  • Whip in a fruit smoothie
  • Add to lemonade
  • Blend a slice in with a margarita
  • Chop for a fruit salsa
  • Put in your morning bowl of yogurt
  • Create a fruit bowl by slicing in half, scoop out dragon fruit, cut cubes, add mangos & serve in the half shell

We hope you’ll try this amazing fruit soon and please share with us in the comments below if you have any favorite ways that you like to prepare Dragon Fruit!
