Kona's Magic Dragon Fruit
Exotic fruits always remind me of refreshing summer drinks, but did you know that the tropical Dragon Fruit is actually a type of cactus? Its beautiful armored exterior is reminiscent of the top of a dragon's head, but the flesh of this fruit can be as soft as a ripened kiwi. In fact, it's pretty easy to cut into one of them and scoop the fruit out like a papaya. This nutritional wonder comes in dramatic colors of reds, fuschia and white, which make for amazing desserts and smoothies. Dragon fruit is also high in antioxidants and provides a good source of Vitamin C and other minerals.
They aren't found everywhere, but fortunately for us, Susie and Terry Weaver of Kona Dragon Fruit Company are the largest growers of this wonderful fruit on the islands. The good news is that it is not just our Big Island stores that are carrying them, as we've brought them to all of our stores on the islands, so come and try one for yourself!

Buddha's Hand is a uniquely shaped and very fragrant citrus fruit grown locally here on Maui at Howard's Nursery. More well known in China and Japan for perfuming rooms and personal items such as clothing, this fruit is also given as a religious offering in Buddhist temples. According to tradition, Buddha prefers the "fingers" of the fruit to be in a position where they resemble a closed rather than open hand, as closed hands symbolize to Buddha the act of prayer.

We’re working with farmers who think the same way we do here at Foodland - that taste is number one. These growers are the best and they leave the fruit on the trees longer, so the fruit actually ripens on the tree. That really allows the fruit to have a higher sugar content. So the fruit that you’ll find in our stores this summer will be the sweetest fruit available anywhere. The sweetest apples, cherries, berries, melons, peaches, pineapples, and a whole lot more that your family will ... more »
