Our Easter Lilies are here – add Spring cheer to your home!

Spring is in the air, and Foodland is happy to offer beautiful, locally grown Easter lily plants. Howard Takishita, owner of Howard’s Nurseries in Kula, Maui, is the green thumb who produces these wonderful lilies because they hold a very special place in his heart. As a young boy, Howard was the first child on Maui to be diagnosed with polio, and it was Maui’s Easter Seals Early Intervention program that helped provide therapy and support for him many years ago. In the spirit of giving back, Howard and Sandy Takishita have provided thousands of potted lilies each year for over 15 years and have partnered with Foodland and Young Brothers to make them available at all Foodland and Sack N Save locations.

Starting today, Easter lily plants are available at all 33 Foodland, Sack N Save and Foodland Farms stores. What’s special about the lilies is that through a partnership with Howard’s Nurseries, a dollar from each Easter lily plant sold is donated to Easter Seals Hawaii who has been providing services to infants, children and adults with disabilities and other special needs, and support to their families since 1946. That’s over 70 years of service and we are honored to be a part of raising awareness and supporting this great cause.

Here are some tips for maintaining Easter lily plants:

  • In the home, Easter lilies prefer fairly cool temperatures of 60-65 degrees.
  • Never place your lily in a draft or where it will be exposed to heat or dry air.
  • Easter lilies thrive in bright, indirect daylight, but the blossoms will quickly wilt and fade if they are placed in direct sunlight.
  • Turn your lily every couple of days to prevent the stalk from ‘leaning’ toward the light.
  • Easter lilies prefer well-drained soil which is kept moderately moist, but avoid over-watering.

We hope that you’ll purchase your next Easter lily at Foodland. You can make a difference!

Thank you in advance and Happy Easter from all of us at Foodland.
