Shingles the pain within...

If you've ever had chickenpox, you have the Varicella-zoster virus lurking in your bloodstream. Since this virus also causes shingles, anyone who's ever had chickenpox can get shingles. About 25 percent of all adults, who may otherwise be healthy, will get shingles during their lifetime. The chance of getting shingles increases with age, so adults over 60 are ten times more likely to get shingles than children under 10. The virus shoots down a nerve, causing the numbness, itching, severe pain and later the blistering rash associated with shingles.

So just how bad are shingles? If you're a fan of the Late Show host, David Letterman, you might recall that in twenty years of hosting the show, the only other time he had to miss work aside from his heart bypass surgery, was a bad case of shingles. In fact, the shingles kept him out just as long as the quintuple bypass surgery did!

The good news is that Foodland Pharmacies have the vaccine to stop shingles in their tracks. One injection of Zostavax can prevent these painful shingles and your insurance will most likely cover the vaccine. Put shingles down before they put you down!
