This month marks the 64th anniversary of Foodland’s founding, an occasion we look forward to celebrating with all of you. Each year, our anniversary reminds us of how fortunate and blessed we are to have great customers and employees who support us. Locally owned, family businesses like ours are few and far between today (in fact, Foodland and KTA are the only locally owned supermarket chains remaining in Hawaii) and we know our company would not be here today if it were not for all of you.
While we will celebrate our anniversary with great savings and activities for all our customers, a special event will be held at Foodland Kailua , the town where we like to say our story began. That’s right, while the first actual Foodland Super Market was located at Market City Shopping Center at the busy corner of Kapiolani and Harding in Honolulu, our true history began when Mama Lau, a Chinese immigrant, purchased Lanikai Store in Kailua in 1941. There, she, her husband, and their daughter Joanna sold groceries, produce, freshly made lup cheong and more to residents and visitors of this Windward town. It was at Lanikai store in 1943 that the Laus first met Sully Sullivan as he combed the island for produce to procure for the officer’s mess hall at Hickam Air Force Base. Mama Lau befriended Sully and introduced him to local farmers. He came to help out at the store when he could and Mama offered him a job at Lanikai Store after the war. There, working together, they dreamed of opening a supermarket together. And that vision became a reality with the opening of Foodland Market City on May 6, 1948.
The company’s Kailua beginnings were fortuitous in other ways as well. Not only were Foodland’s fifth and twelfth stores located in Kailua, but Sully Sullivan soon married Mama’s daughter, Joanna Lau, and the two raised their family in Kailua – right next to the Kailua Road store.
In August, 2001, our company opened a brand new Kailua store with fresh seafood, bakery, and deli departments, a pharmacy, and R. Field Wine Company . It is a store that continues to honor the proud roots of Foodland through a team that cares for customers just the way Sully and the Laus did at Lanikai store.
We hope you will stop by for our special 64th Anniversary event at Foodland Kailua on Sunday, May 6th from 10:00am - 2:00pm :
