May 6 is a very special day here at Foodland as it marks the 65th anniversary of the opening of our first store – and Hawaii’s first supermarket – at Market City shopping center in Honolulu. The pride all of us who work here feel can be summed up in the words of Joanna Sullivan, wife of our late founder, Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan who recently explained her excitement about our 65th anniversary saying, “I’m so proud that Foodland remains locally owned and operated and continues to thrive and grow after all these years.” We couldn’t agree more! With so few local companies left in Hawaii – and no other local supermarket remaining with stores across the state – we know how very fortunate we are to be around. That our company has come so far from its very humble beginnings is a credit not only to our team, but also our community, our customers, and the many vendor partners who have supported us over the years.
From its earliest days, Foodland relied on the support of many people. Senator Hiram Fong and his family who had purchased the land at the corner of Kapiolani and Harding took a gamble by leasing our founders space for our first store. Hawaii's two big grocery wholesalers provided merchandise to stock the store based on Sully’s promise that he would pay them back a week after the store opened. The newspapers gave Sully advertising on credit. Customers came by the hundreds to support Foodland and employees worked tirelessly to keep the shelves stocked and ensure customers were happy. And while the company grew quickly, opening a store a year for the next ten years, Sully never forgot that Foodland’s success was only possible because of the support of the people of Hawaii.
Sully instilled in us a strong sense of responsibility for our community and showed us the importance of working hard to make Hawaii a better place. We honor his legacy through programs like Give Aloha and Shop for Education , but most of all by being committed to making sure that “Serving Customers is the Most Important Thing We Do.”
So as we celebrate our 65th Anniversary this month, we think it is only fitting that we invite you to participate in our celebration. You’ll find we’re celebrating in many ways from great deals to new rewards and more! We hope you will stop in and see us, join in the fun, and let us thank you in person. After all, Foodland would not be here today – let alone remain locally owned – if not for you.
